Zucchini, Spacemiser F1 HybridItem # SS103
The best squash/zucchini for container growing: said to be only about 18 to 24 inches across, yet produce normal size zucchini. Spacemiser F1 Hybrid will produce mature fruit approximately 49 days after you plant the seeds (outdoors, after danger of frost is past, or indoors about one week before you plan to set them out). Don't forget that the flowers are edible, and if you eat male flowers only, you won't cut down on the amount of zucchini you get. The first flowers are males and will fall off the plant: don't panic. This is normal. The female flowers (which you can tell by the tiny baby squash at their base) will come along about a week after the males. Everyone can buy full-size zucchini in the stores: but not everyone can have baby zucchini, maybe with the flowers still attached, as a special treat. So pick them young and enjoy them - that's when they are at their very best. Growing directions. (From Cornell University's Cooperative Extension Website - will open in new window: close window to return here). Recommended container size: Use a large container for this, at least 14 or 15" in diameter and 12" deep and the larger, the better. It need not be a purpose-made plant pot: there are all kinds of tubs and containers sold in dollar and discount stores (for the purpose of home storage) that make really good, really cheap plant pots: just drill holes in the bottom for drainage. Or you could use a laundry-basket lined with black plastic.
