Lettuces Lettuce Variety Packs Gourmet Mixes Mizuna

Lettuce, Black-Seeded Simpson - Item #LET102
Latuca sativa

Black-seeded Simpson is an heirloom lettuce, introduced around 1850. It's still a favorite, and for good reason: it is extra-early, very reliable, tasty and pretty. Black-seeded Simpson's leaves are frilly and a pretty pale green.

Growing directions. (From Cornell University's Cooperative Extension Website - will open in new window: close window to return here).

Recommended container size: A 6" deep, 6" diameter pot would be a minimum for one head of lettuce. But probably you'll want to use a larger container and plant several heads, at least, or to use this lettuce as part of a mixed planting.

Quantity - About 100 seeds
Price - $ 1.25

Lettuce, Red Deer Tongue - Item #LET104

This is a 60 day heirloom. The delicate triangular shaped red leaves make an interesting addition to any salad or sandwhich.
Slow to bolt, this variety helps to extend the lettuce season.

Quantity - About 100 seeds
Price - $ 1.30

Lettuce, Gourmet Mix, Organic - Item # LET103
Latuca sativa

A very special lettuce mix, containing looseleaf, buttercrunch and romaine-type lettuces, both red and green. Sprinkle the seeds in rows about 8" apart, and use the "cut and come again" method of harvesting, starting when the leaves are about 4" tall. This mix will make a salad that is both visually pleasing and very tasty. You can combine this with our Mild Mustard Mesclun Mix or our Spicy Mustard Mesclun Mix for a complete mesclun salad. Of course, the lettuce mix is a great salad by itself, too.

Growing directions. (From Cornell University's Cooperative Extension Website - will open in new window: close window to return here).

Recommended container size: Any container that is at least 6" deep.

Quantity - 100 seeds.
Price - $ 1.40

Lettuce, Little Gem Baby Romaine (Sugar Cos) - Item # LET105
Latuca sativa

Little Gem is a lovely romaine, all green, and very tasty. It seems to withstand summer heat better than other lettuces I have grown, although - of course - it is basically a cool weather plant. Pick it when the little upright romaine-style head is from 5" to 7" tall, which will be from 50-70 days after planting the seed. I love this particular lettuce and grow it every year, along with Tom Thumb (and some full-size lettuces too).

Growing directions. (From Cornell University's Cooperative Extension Website - will open in new window: close window to return here).

Recommended container size: Anything at least 6" deep and 6" in diameter (for one plant), but you'll want to plant more than one, of course.

Also sold as part of our Baby Lettuce Trio Variety Pack.

Quantity - 100 seeds
Price - $ 1.40

Little Leprechaun Romaine Lettuce, Little Leprechaun (Baby Red Romaine) - Item #LET106
Latuca sativa

Little Leprechaun is a gorgeous baby red romaine, with leaves in shades of mahogany, red, and green. Pick when about 8" tall - that's the prime size. This is another great choice for one-person salads. It will require about 52 days after planting to mature.

Price - $ 1.70

Lettuce, Tom Thumb - Item # LET101
Lactuca sativa.
Tom Thumb Lettuce Miniature butterhead lettuce - each tennis-ball-sized head is just right for one good-sized salad. Medium green leaves are tender and very sweet. Easily grown indoors or out, and takes about 50 days from seed to harvest. This is a delightful lettuce, I think it's my very favorite of all the lettuces. Really super for people who live alone or whose husbands won't eat salad (but I name no names!). You can grow lots of little Tom Thumb lettuces and pick your salad fresh each day.

Growing directions. (From Cornell University's Cooperative Extension Website - will open in new window: close window to return here).

Recommended container size - You can use any container (with drainage holes, of course) that's at least 6" deep. Just picture the surface area covered with slightly oversized tennis balls: that's how many heads of Tom Thumb you can grow in the container.

Baby Lettuce Trio Variety Pack.

Quantity - approx. 100 seeds
Price - $1.60

Baby Lettuce Trio Variety Pack - Item #VP103

The baby lettuces - Little Gem Romaine, Little Leprechaun Red Romaine, and Tom Thumb (buttercrunch lettuce) - packed separately so that you can choose which one to plant where. All are just lovely lettuces: pick a fresh one-person-sized head of lettuce for salad every night. Or pick one of each, for a three-person salad. The babies have the advantage of being faster to mature, as well. I have a salad every single night in season, and boy, do I miss them in winter! (She writes sadly, looking out at the falling snow.....)

Quantity - 50 seeds each, 150 seeds total.
Price - $ 2.25

This mix includes Red Russian Kale, Mizuna, Tat Soi, Spring Raab, Scarlet Ohno and a diverse collection of original mustards from noted breeder Frank Morton. This is for people who prefer to grow the lettuce component of mesclun and the mustard component (brassicas) separately. This mix is very mild and tasty.

Mizuna - Item #MIZ101
Brassica rapa var. nippposinica (or var. japonica)

Mizuna is an exceptionally pretty plant that forms a giant rosette of finely dissected, feathery leaves. It's a really great choice for ornamental containers, and a good choice for underplanting: plant it under growing pepper or tomato plants, for instance. Mizuna can be used as a braising green, but I think that - in the west - it's most often used in salads. It will add flavor, color, and pretty leaves to your salads. While technically a mustard, it doesn't taste at all like a mustard to me: the flavor is very mild. You can begin harvesting this variety of mizuna about 40 days after transplanting it out - harvest by the cut-and-come-again method or make several plantings. This plant is one of my favorites.

Growing directions. (From Cornell University's Cooperative Extension Website. Will open in new window: close window to return here).

Please refer to my brassica article for easy, effective ways to protect this plant from damage caused by the larvae of cabbage butterflies and cabbage moths.

Recommended container size: 8" of depth should suffice, but mizuna forms a fairly large rosette: I think it will need at least 12" in diameter.

Quantity - 40 seeds
Price - $ 1.50
