Beets Carrots Radishes Turnips

Beets, Cylindra (Forono) Item# BT101
Beta vulgaris

Cylindra is shaped like a cylinder instead of being round like most beets. Mature beets will be about 6" long and 2" in diameter. I've chosen to offer this variety because it has obvious advantages for container gardeners: you can fit many more beets into a given size container. It makes nice uniform slices for a salad plate too, or for pickling. Other than that, it's just a very nice beet, with great greens too. Beets seeds are compound seeds (several seeds agglutinated together) so thinning is definitely necessary. When you harvest the beets, remember that you can eat the greens too and - in fact - many people (including me) consider them to be the very best green of all.

Growing directions. (From Cornell University's Cooperative Extension Website - will open in new window: close window to return here).

Recommended container size: I think you'll need ten inches of depth for these. Area: you can plant them on 3" centers, or about 16 beets in one square foot of area, so this should give you an idea.

Quantity - 40 seeds.
Price - $ 1.50.

Beets, Detroit Dark Red Item# BT102

The standard for beets was introduced in 1892. The nearly globe shaped, blood-red 3" diameter roots
are good for canning and fresh eating, and is also a good keeper.

Quantity - 30 seeds.
Price - $1.40

Carrots, Kinko - Item #CAR101
Daucus carota var. sativus

Kinko are true "baby carrots": they will attain the length of about 4", and are shaped rather like a thick cone. These are very sweet and very good, far surpassing the fake "baby carrots" in supermarkets which are really just big carrots cut up by machine and cannot be compared to a true "baby carrot." Kinko will mature in about 52 days after planting the seeds (directly outdoors from early spring on). Carrots can be grown from early spring to late fall - you can have several successive crops in a season.

Growing directions. (From Cornell University's Cooperative Extension Website - will open in new window: close window to return here). Also, please note that carrots should not be transplanted: start them directly in their permanent containers.

Recommended container size: Anything with about 8" depth of soil, and about 8" in diameter will hold several carrots.

Quantity - 100 seeds
Price - $ 1.55

Carrots, Oxheart - ORGANIC - Item #CAR103
Daucus carota var. sativus

Oxheart is a short and very thick heirloom carrot, introduced in 1884. I've chosen it because it does not requires as much depth of soil as other carrots, and therefore, can be grown in many containers that will not accommodate longer carrots. The carrots mature to about 5-6" long by 3-4" thick, and will weigh about one pound. Days to maturity: about 90.

Growing directions. (From Cornell University's Cooperative Extension Website - will open in new window: close window to return here). Also, please note that carrots should not be transplanted: start them directly in their permanent containers.

Recommended container size: I would recommend at least 10" in depth, and the carrots should be thinned to about 8" centers (i.e., 8" apart from each other in all directions).

Quantity - approximately 100 seeds
Price - $ 1.55

Carrots, Little Finger - Item #CAR102

Maturing in only 65 days. These deep orange carrots, grow to about 3" long and 1/2" wide.
With a smooth skin and small core, these sweet and tender carrots should be harvested young. Recommended container size: Any container over 6" deep will do.

Quantity - 100 seeds.
Price - $ 1.55

Radish, Champion - Item # RAD101
Raphanus sativus

Bright red, crispy, mild-tasting little globes will be ready to pull and eat in about 25 days after sowing the seeds. You can interplant these with almost anything else and they'll be finished before the other plant needs the room.

Recommended container size - It depends on how many radishes you want to plant. Any depth over 6" should be OK. Otherwise, just picture the container covered with radishes and you'll know how many it can hold.

Quantity - 75 seeds
Price - $1.00

Turnip, Purple White Top - Item #TUR101

At 55 days, this sweet, mild tasting heirloom turnip not only tastes good, it also stores good over the winter.
the roots are best at 2-3" but can grow up to 6" in diameter. the tops also make good greens.

Quantity - 50 seeds
Price - $ 1.55
