Peppers

Growing directions for peppers. (From Cornell University's Cooperative Extension Website - will open in new window: close window to return here). I cannot add much to these directions, they seem fairly comprehensive and accurate to me. I think peppers are easy to grow - they've just never had any particular problems in my experience. They are definitely warmth lovers so they will not want to be transplanted outdoors until your weather is reliably warm (unless you can protect them from cold in some manner): transplant them out later than tomatoes, for example. Occasionally, some insect (I think an earwig) gets into ripe peppers and spoils them: that's about the only problem I have ever had with peppers, and it is occasional. On each plant, I usually pick some peppers green, and let others ripen (hedging my bets).

All peppers are pretty plants, suitable for decorative containers, and some are really stunning (Tricolor Variegata, or Pretty Purple, for example). Some of our peppers are small enough to grow on a windowsill (Nosegay, Sweet Pickle). Peppers also blend nicely into a flower bed or flower border.

Pepper, Fat 'n Sassy Hybrid - Item #PS101
Capsicum anuum

Fat 'n Sassy Hybrid is a sweet bell pepper, which matures from green into red.
It's a good choice for northern or short-season gardens: it will mature fruit about 65 days after setting out transplants.
I grew this last year, an extremely cool and wet summer. I was impressed with Fat 'n Sassy's ability to produce peppers in the face of very unfavorable conditions.
I recommend it as a good, sweet bell pepper.

Recommended container size: Minimum 12" depth and about 12" diameter.

Pepper, Feher Ozon - Item #PS102
Great choice for containers. Plant is about 15" tall, and thrives in a pot thats 7"tall and 10" in diameter.
The candle-flame shaped sweet peppers are first white then change to golden yellow, then orange.
The peppers are large enough to be useful - about 4 to 5" long. This is a very decorative pepper plant, very pretty.
These were tremendously productive for me: lots and lots of peppers. I would rcommend them as the single most useful container-pepper Iv'e ever grown.

Pepper, Sweet Pickle - Item #PS108
Capsicum annuum.

A true miniature pepper. The little peppers, in shades of red, orange, yellow, and purple (simultaneously), make this a very ornamental little plant. Unlike most ornamentals, these peppers are sweet. Good for growing indoors in winter, using natural sunshine plus supplemental fluorescent light. Very good for mixed containers - adds a real color "zing". Will have peppers approximately 75 days after transplanting outdoors, a little longer indoors.

NOTE: I have grown this Sweet Pickle for years and never had a problem with it. However, I have been growing a Sweet Pickle plant this winter (indoors) and its peppers are HOT - more like a Jalapeno. I don't know why: possibly our source (who are reliable - I've dealt with them for years) mixed up the seeds. So, if you buy this seed, it's at your own risk. Maybe you'll get true Sweet Pickle seeds (sweet peppers) and maybe you'll get seeds for a hot pepper. Recommended container size: 6"-10" pots.

Pepper, Garden Salsa - Item #PH101
Capsicum anuum
This 73 day hybrid, has a medium range heat level that is close to that of a Jalapeno.
the large plant will produce many 8"-9" x 1" fruit that turn red upon ripening.

Recommended container size: At least 14" deep, and at least 12" in diameter - larger would be better, in this case.

Quantity - 10 seeds

Pepper, Jalapeno Early - Item #PH102
Capsicum anuum

Jalapeno Early's peppers are first dark green, then turn to red.
Peppers will be produced in about 65 days after transplanting out, making this a good choice for short-season gardeners.
The peppers measure 4000 to 6000 Scoville units, making them ... well, it depends on your definition of "really hot".
Let's just say: pretty hot - as hot as you would expect a jalapeno to be, but not take-off-the-top-of-your-head hot.
Plants are prolific, and will produce peppers until frost. Plants can become as much as 3' tall.

Recommended container size: At least 14" deep, and at least 12" in diameter - larger would be better, in this case.

Quantity - 15 seeds
Price - $1.50

Pepper, Mulato Isleno - Item #PH103
Capsicum anuum

Mulato Isleno is a very mildly hot, poblano-type pepper (when dried, poblanos are called "ancho peppers"). The peppers are heart-shaped, and mature from green to dark chocolate-brown, in about 85-95 days after transplanting out (that takes it to the brown stage). It has 1000 Scoville units, which makes it a very mildly hot pepper (as hot peppers go). This is a good choice for chiles rellenos, for salsa, and for roasting.

Recommended container size: At least 12" deep and 12" across.

Quantity - 15 seeds
Price - $2.25

Pepper, Tri-color Variegata (Tri-fetti) - Item #PH104
Capsicum anuum

Tri-color Variegata is one the most beautiful of the ornamental peppers:
each leaf has shades of green, purple, and white. The plants are fairly low-growing (about 12" to 18" tall when mature) and mound-shaped, making them suitable as borders for flower beds,
or in mixed container plantings. Tri-color Variegata's small, very hot fruits are purple, turning red when ripe, and will mature in about 75 days after setting out seedlings.
The small hot peppers are edible, but I don't think anyone really grows this for the peppers, but rather for the lovely foliage.

Recommended container size: Probably about 10" depth and about 12" diameter would suffice.

Quantity - 10 seeds
Price - $ 1.60
