Calliope will yield lots of small eggplants even under challenging conditions (cool climates) - making it an excellent choice for northern gardeners. The eggplants are tear-drop shaped and are violet streaked with white and very pretty indeed. Pick them when 2" in diameter for baby eggplants, 4" in diameter for mature eggplants. They will be ready to pick about 64 days after setting out the transplants. The plants are spineless.

Eggplant, Fairy Tale Hybrid - Item #EP102
Solanum melongena

Fairy Tale Hybrid, a brand-new variety of eggplant, is a very exciting eggplant for container growers. If you grow eggplants in containers at all, please give Fairy Tale Hybrid a try, it's definitely one of the very best eggplants for containers. The dwarf plant will be about 2' to 2 -1/2' tall, and covered with showy lavender blossoms. The fruit grow in clusters of from two to four, and are long, slim, neon-violet striped with white. They will mature in about 50 days from setting out the transplants - very early for an eggplant. This variety has been chosen to be an All-America Selection for 2005 (quite an honor for a new vegetable variety). In addition to its numerous other virtues, it is said to taste great. Pick the eggplants young (4" to 6" long) for the very best eating.

Here's what the All-America Selection Board says about Fairy Tale Hybrid:

Eggplant F1 ‘Fairy Tale’ Vegetable Award Winner "Fairy Tale" is a petite plant with decorative miniature eggplants. The fruit appearance is as luscious as the taste. "Fairy Tale" eggplants are white with violet/purple stripes. The fruit are sweet, non-bitter, with a tender skin and few seeds. Another superior quality is the window for harvest. The elongated oval eggplants can be picked when quite small at 1 to 2 ounces or they can be left on the plant until double the weight, and the flavor and tenderness remain. "Fairy Tale" eggplants are recommended for marinating and grilling whole. The harvest can begin in just 49 to 51 days from transplanting. The petite plant reaches only 2˝ feet tall and wide, perfect for container gardening. An eggplant has not won an AAS award since 1939, so "Fairy Tale" is truly an exceptional new variety. Fairy Tale Hybrid sounds like an outstanding variety for container gardeners. I'm looking forward to growing it this summer.

Recommended container size: at least 12" deep, and 12" in diameter. A bit larger wouldn't hurt.

Quantity - 15 seeds.

Rosa Bianca Eggplant Eggplant, Rosa Bianca - Item # EP104
Solanum melongena

Rosa Bianca is one of the most beautiful eggplants, and delicious too: the flesh is mild and white. The plant is decorative and more compact than other eggplants that I have grown (except the miniature Bambino): Rosa Bianca is about two feet tall. It has eggplant's usual pretty lavender flowers. It has one problem, at least in my area's relatively cool summers: I wouldn't recommend that Rosa Bianca be one's only eggplant. But if you're growing more than one variety, it is a beauty and eminently suitable for a decorative container garden.

Growing directions. (From Cornell University's Cooperative Extension Website - will open in new window: close window to return here).

Recommended container size: 12" in diameter, 12" deep. A five gallon bucket would work, too, though not very decorative.

Quantity - 20 seeds
Price - $ 1.50
