Bush Beans - Filet Beans, Delinel - Item # BB105
Phaseolus vulgaris

Delinel is a filet (French-style) bean, very flavorful, tender, and stringless. Pick the beans when they are about 1/3" in diameter (no more than the thickness of a pencil). The plants are vigorous, upright, and productive. Beans will be ready about 54 days after planting the seeds directly outside. They are definitely a gourmet treat!

Growing Directions (will open in new window: close window to return here.)

Recommended container size: They'll need at least 6" depth of soil. I grow 4 bush bean plants in a pot that's about 12" deep and 14" across.

Quantity - 40 seeds
Price - $ 1.90

Bush Beans, Provider - Item #BB101
Phaseolus vulgaris

Delicious and early round-podded, green snap beans will be ready to eat about 55 days after planting the seeds.

Provider is a very reliable, popular snap bean. If you haven't had freshly-picked homegrown snap beans, you won't believe how much better they are than those you can buy in the stores. Picking them while young and tender encourages the plant to produce more, and succession plantings will keep them coming throughout the summer. Snap beans freeze very nicely, should you have an excess.

Bush Beans, Royal Burgundy - Item #BB104
Phaseolus vulgaris

Royal Burgundy has tender and delicious, round-podded snap beans, and they're purple! The beans turn green when cooked. Leaves and stems are dark green with some purple overlays - a decorative plant. Beans will be ready to harvest about 55 days after planting the seeds. Purple beans will grow in cooler weather than other beans, so these are an excellent choice for gardeners with cool summer weather. (They have no objection to hot weather, however.) See Provider, above, for more information.

Bush Lima Beans, Allgreen/Thorogreen - Item #BB106
Phaseolus lunatus

These bush lima plants will become about 18" tall, and bear pods containing 3-4 baby lima beans, about 68 days after planting (directly outdoors). They will bear until fall. Limas are definitely a heat-loving plant and sensitive to cold, so wait until the weather is good and warm before planting them. I have not grown limas myself and I don't know if you can grow a significant amount of them in containers: but I'm offering them for those who may just *want* to grow them. I do, and I will try them this summer. I have never tasted a home-grown, fresh lima bean: and I probably never will, unless I grow them myself.

See my snap bean-article for growing directions, but bear in mind that limas are more sensitive to cold than snap beans, and they really need warm weather. (Article will open in new window: close window to return here.)

Recommended container size: 10" depth, at least, and about 10" in diameter (I cannot find any recommendations, I'm guessing here based on the expected plant height of 18".)

Quantity - 20
Price - $ 1.85

New!Pole Beans, Kentucky Blue - Item #BP101 New!
Phaseolus vulgaris

Kentucky Blue is the classic American-style pole snap bean: a blend of Kentucky Wonder's good taste and BLue Lakes' reliability. I grew Kentucky Blue last year, and I like it considerably better than Kentucky Wonder: it was more productive for me, and tasted better too. 58 days from seed-sowing to table. Pick them young, and pick them often. Trellising or bean poles are necessary: or you could try using one of our tall sunflowers as bean poles. If you do, give the sunflowers a head start of a week or two.

Growing Directions (will open in new window: close window to return here.) Also see Growing directions. (From Cornell University's Cooperative Extension Website. Will open in new window: close window to return here).

Recommended container size: I use a pot that's about 12" deep, and about 14" in diameter: this will hold several pole bean plants - larger containers are fine too.

Also sold as part of our Pole Bean Variety Pack.

Quantity - 20 seeds
Price - $ 1.50

Pole Beans, Super Marconi - Item #BP102
Phaseolus vulgaris

These are Roma-type pole beans - the flat, broad, Italian style beans. They have outstanding taste and are very productive. The pods will reach 10" to 11" without strings, and they will still be tender and delicious.

Pole Beans, Trionfo Violetto - Item #BP103
Phaseolus vulgaris

Trionfo Violette is a purple-podded, French (round-podded) pole bean, pretty, and easier to pick than green beans - the purple is more easily visible against the green foliage. The beans turn green when cooked. Pick them young, when they are at their most delicious, to keep them coming! Trellising or bean poles are necessary: or you could try using one of our tall sunflowers as bean poles. If you do, give the sunflowers a head start of a week or two.

Pole Beans, Yellow Annellino - Item #BP104
Phaseolus vulgaris

Yellow Annellino is (surprise!) a yellow pole bean. Like the purple pole beans, yellow ones are easier to find and pick than green beans. The yellow beans have a particularly delicate flavor, I think, and are perhaps the most tender. Unlike purple beans, the yellow ones keep their color when cooked.

New!Runner Beans, Dwarf Bees - Item #BR101New!
Phaseolus coccineus

Dwarf Bees are a most decorative bean, with lots of lovely scarlet blossoms from about 45 days after planting the seeds until frost. Dwarf Bees will only grow to from 18" to two feet in height, and do not require trellising. The beans are edible, and should be picked very young for best flavor and tenderness. The flowers are edible as well, and make a beautiful garnish or give a salad some visual "oomph". Pick beans when the seeds are just beginning to appear inside the pods, and slice them before cooking. They can also be used as "shelly beans" - in this case, let the beans inside the pods get about as large as lima beans, shell them, and cook like baby limas. Lastly, you can let the pods dry on the vines either to save seed for the next year, or to eat the beans dried - in which case cook them as you would navy beans, or kidney beans. But since the lovely flowers are probably the main point here, I'd pick and eat the beans when very young to encourage more bloom. Runner beans, including Dwarf Bees, enjoy cooler weather than snap beans, so they can be planted earlier than snap beans. They are very popular in the UK, probably because they do so well in a cool summer and can be grown in partial shade in hot weather. They are also an excellent choice for the cooler areas of New England, Canada, and rainy and cool parts of the Pacific Northwest.

Dwarf Bees runner beans are a great choice for a decorative planting, and they attract hummingbirds!

Recommended container size: at least 12" deep, at least 12" in diameter (diameter will depend on how many plants you wish to grow, of course)

Quantity - 15 seeds
Price - $ 1.85

Runner Beans, Scarlet Runner - Item #BR102
Phaseolus coccineus

Scarlet runner beans are a wonderfully decorative bean, with loads of beautiful scarlet blossoms from around July until frost. The beans are edible, and should be picked very young for best flavor and tenderness. They will produce young snap beans in 70 days and dry beans in 115 days. They are a very tall, vigorous plant and require strong support. Scarlet runners like cool weather, so they're a good choice for northern gardeners in the US and Canada, as well as those in the Pacific Northwest. Scarlet runners are much grown in the UK, probably because they do like cool summers, as well as for their beautiful flowers.

And - maybe best of all - scarlet runner beans attract hummingbirds!

These beautiful beans are a great choice for a decorative container. How does this sound, for a vivid, striking container? Scarlet runner beans are the tall, spiky component of the container, winged peas - also covered with red blossoms - cascade over the edge, and in the middle (round and full) are frilly green lettuces plus a couple of basil plants - stunning! And good to eat too.

Recommended container size: at least 12" deep, at least 12" in diameter (diameter will depend on how many plants you wish to grow, of course)

Quantity - 15 seeds
Price - $ 1.75

Yard-Long Beans, Liana - Item #BY101
Vigna unguiculata

Steam or stir-fry the pencil-thin, round, 18" to 20" pods (don't leave them to become a yard-long, they would be tough and overgrown at that length). Liana is a variety especially bred to be day-length neutral so even northern gardeners should have success with this bean - as long as you have warm summers. This variety of bean likes heat. I've grown them very successfully in the northeastern USA. Definitely needs support: provide some kind of trellis or grow them by a fence. They will grow very tall and long, given the opportunity, and can be a good sunshade. Yard-long beans also have pretty blossoms.

Recommended container size: At least 10" deep, and the area depends on how many plants you will be growing.

Quantity - 30 seeds
Price - $1.80
