Calendula - Item #FLW103
Calendula officinalis Double, daisy-like flowers in cheerful shades of yellow and orange, on 12-18" plants. Flower petals are used as a saffron substitute (imparting the color, but not the flavor, of saffron to foods), and leaves (as well as flower petals) can be used in salads, sauces, and for herbal tea. This is the original calendula, the one that's used for herbal tea and various medicinal purposes. It is also called 'pot marigold', by the way, and is the 'marigold' referred to by Shakespeare and other early writers. It's a very obliging plant, easy to grow. Growing directions. (From Cornell University's Cooperative Extension Website. Will open in new window: close window to return here). Recommended container size - A pot at least 8" in diameter, and 8" in depth. Larger would be better.

Nasturtium, Empress of India - Item #FLW105
Tropaeolum majus Empress of India has blue-green foliage and very dark orange flowers. It will trail artistically out of a flower box, if "encouraged" to trail (just brush your hands over the plant and gently push it in the direction you want it to go, several times). I've read in various sources that the plants grow to a length of 12", but mine were much longer than that (more like five feet long!). Nasturtiums will produce more blooms and less foilage in a not-very-rich, sandy soil. Nasturtium seeds are large and easy to handle, and the seeds should be sown directly in the plant's ultimate container, after danger of heavy frost. Both leaves and flowers can be eaten and have a peppery taste - they're a terrific 'edible garnish' or can be sprinkled on salads (etc.). Flower buds can be pickled and used as a caper substitute, and the seeds can be dried and ground for a black-pepper substitute. And of course, it's decorative. This is really a great multi-purpose plant. Growing directions. (From Cornell University's Cooperative Extension Website. Will open in new window: close window to return here).
Recommended container size - Nasturtium will need a soil depth of at least 6", and the area of the container's surface is up to you. I grow them in flower boxes on our front porch: they are great in window boxes, too, and flower pouches or hanging baskets.

Pansy, Rococo Mix - Item #FLW114
Viola x wittrockiana Rococo Mix Pansies have large ruffle-edged flowers in red, blue, purple, yellow, and various shades thereof. Some of the flowers have the multi-colored blotches. Start your seeds indoors in late winter for transplanting out when they are about 2" tall - they like cool weather, so get them planted out in early spring for spring/summer bloom and/or start seeds in late summer for fall-into-winter flowers. Pansies can flourish in full sun or partial shade. Pansies are used as an edible garnish, and what a stunning one they are! Growing directions. (From Cornell University's Cooperative Extension Website. Will open in new window: close window to return here). Note the directions for chilling the seeds after sowing them.
Recommended container size - 4" diameter pot, 4" depth of soil will handle one plans. But I think most people will be tucking them into mixed containers or using them as an edging in larger containers.

Shungiku (Edible Chrysanthemum) - Item #HB107
Chrysanthemum coronarium Shungiku is also known as "garland chrysanthemum" and "chop suey greens" in English, and several other names in various Asian languages. I don't know whether to call this an Asian green, an herb, or an edible flower. It's really all three. It's a very pleasant, good tasting plant too: leaves are used in soups, stir-fries, or tossed on salads. They are also used in pickles, sushi, or suki-yaki and other Japanese dishes. It's very difficult to describe a taste, but I'd say that shungiku has a fresh, crisp, floral-mint taste. Our seeds are from the round-leafed strain of shungiku - it's more decorative than the plainer, larger leaf type. You can start snipping leaves about 21 days after sowing seeds, or when they are at least 4" tall. Left unharvested, the plant will eventually become 3-4 feet tall and bear (rather unexciting) yellow or orange flowers. The flowers can be used as an edible garnish. Growing directions: this plant likes cool weather, so plant in spring and and again in late summer for fall growing. Germination temperature: around 70 F (21 C). I start shungiku seeds in the house, at normal room temperature. Time to germinate: about 6-14 days. Transplant out in spring, but when the worst of winter's cold is over. I transplant mine out about one week before our expected last frost date. I have never had any problems or diseases or insect damage with shungiku. Recommended container size: About 10" in soil depth, and about 12" diameter, minimum. Larger would be fine too.

Helianthus annuus Double Dandy is a very special sunflower: the world's first dwarf red sunflower. Double Dandy is multi-branched, about two feet tall, the petals are dark wine-red, and the centers are black. It has double the usual amount of petals. From the pictures I have seen, it's just gorgeous. I'm looking forward to growing it this summer so I can photograph it for this page. The exact shade of red will vary with light conditions (but I don't know which way: my guess is that the more light, the darker the red).
Growing directions. (From the BBC. Will open in new window: close window to return here). Note that the BBC's directions for starting sunflowers in pots assume that this is done in a cold greenhouse. They say "place pots on a heated bench or in a propagator with the temperature set at 13°C (55°F)." You don't need to worry about this: just start the seeds in your house (assuming that your house has an average temperature of 55°F or over). Or you can start sunflower seeds directly outdoors, after the weather is nice and warm. Recommended container size: at least 12" deep, and at least about 12" in diameter.

Helianthus anuus A tall sunflower, for those who want to grow one of the big ones. Or maybe you'd like to try using sunflowers as bean poles: growing your pole beans up a sunflower. This would be a good choice. Moulin Rouge is a freely branching sunflower, about 5' to 7' tall. Its 3" to 4" flowers are darkest burgundy with black centers: really striking in bouquets or in the garden. Days to maturity: 65 to 80.

Sunflowers, Music Box#FLW109 - Item #213 Helianthus annuus Very easily grown dwarf sunflowers will reach about 30" in height. These are multi-branched plants that produce lots of blooms. The flowers all have a dark center, and the petal colors range from creamy yellow to dark mahogany. Some are bicolored. Music Box sunflowers are really stunning in a bouquet. The picture shows a few Music Box sunflowers, just stuck in a jar with a zinnia or two - and they still look great. Petals are edible and pretty in a salad (although, if truth be told, they don't have much taste). Seeds are edible too, if you leave the flowers on the plants: but most likely the birds will get the seeds before you do. But feeding birds is also a nice thing to do! Growing directions. (From the BBC. Will open in new window: close window to return here). Note that the BBC's directions for starting sunflowers in pots assume that this is done in a cold greenhouse. They say "place pots on a heated bench or in a propagator with the temperature set at 13°C (55°F)." Or you can start sunflower seeds directly outdoors, after the weather is nice and warm.
Recommended container size - I've grown these in a pot that was 15" in diameter and about 12" deep and they seemed happy enough. I think, however, that a somewhat smaller pot might work as well.

Sunflower, Teddy Bear - Item #FLW110
Helianthus annuus Another great choice for a child's garden, but Teddy Bear is also great as a cut flower. The small plants (2' to 3') bear fluffy, frilly, fully double flowers in a bright golden-yellow color with no dark visible seed center. They're fluffy to the touch. Teddy Bear is reminiscent of a fat fluffy chrysanthemum or a super-huge marigold rather than resembling other sunflowers. See growing directions above in Sunspot's description. Or you can start sunflower seeds directly outdoors, once the weather is nice and warm.
Recommended container size: Soil depth of 12", diameter 12" or more.

Sweet William, Wee Willie - Item #FLW111
Dianthus barbatus. Wee Willie is an annual Dianthus that will bloom in 6-7 weeks from sowing. It's only about 6" (15 cm) tall, and a perfect edging plant. Frilly-edged single flowers are in shades of rose, scarlet, crimson, pink and white. To eat it, remove the bitter white portion at the base of the petals (or just snip off the petals, leaving the base). Petals are now spicy-floral tasting and can be used over fruit salad or desserts. Start your Wee Willie seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost date. You can transplant them outside at your average last frost date, they can withstand some degrees of frost. Or - if you prefer - you can sow the seeds outdoors after danger of frost is past. Growing directions. (Will open in new window: close window to return here). Recommended container size - 4" deep, 4" in diameter will do. Use in mixed plantings too.
